I can’t believe I’m making a guide for a 5 yr old! As my oldest comes out of toddlerhood, as I mourn her growing up, I have to say I love the independence and the remarkable traits that come with 5. As their social, emotional, and physical skills are likely breaking barriers out of the toddler stage, they are ready for more physical and cognitive challenges. The scope of their play may be more independent and include more complex storytelling. When it comes to toys for 5-year-olds, below are my guidelines.
Encourage storytelling and creative engagement.
Fosters imaginative play
Role-playing and group interaction
Speedier movement toys
Continue to develop fine motor skills
Building toys, stem toys (encourage problem-solving and creativity, interactive, improve motor coordinating skills)
Encourage early reading skills.
